Job Title: Phlebotomist

Summary: Draws blood for Shiel Medical Laboratory at Nursing and Long term Care Centers, and house calls for analysis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Must read and sign the Shiel Medical Laboratory Procedure Manual and Phlebotomy Services 
 
Assembles equipment such as tourniquet needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified test or procedures
 
Verifies or records identity of patient
 
Obtains the required specimen according to the Shiel Medical Laboratory Procedure Manual for Laboratory
 
Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag
 
Remove tourniquet, withdraws needle, applies pressure to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing
 
Disposes of medical waste in accordance with safety regulations. Deliver medical waste in closed 'Sharps' containers to the laboratory at least monthly
 
Transports samples in leak-proof, insulated containers containing ice packs (except for samples needing special handling) to laboratory in timely fashion

 Education and/or Experience  
 
 
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Language Skills                                                
 
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  
Reasoning Ability
 
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
 
Valid Driver's License, Phlebotomy Certificate from an accredited institution

Physical Demands
 
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.
 
 
Work Environment
 
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
