Notice to Shiel Patients

Shiel has Recovered a Stolen Computer that Contained Patient Information

At Shiel Medical Laboratories (Shiel), we understand that our patients’ personal information is important, and we are committed to protecting it. On or about January 9, 2017, a Shiel computer that was used to order and receive the results of laboratory tests for patients of a clinic located in Highland Falls, NY was taken from the clinic by an unauthorized person. We learned of this incident on January 18, 2017 and promptly initiated an investigation. On January 27, 2017, we got the computer back from the person who took it and attempted to learn whether information stored on the computer was accessed during the time when it was in the possession of the unauthorized person.  At this time we are not aware of any unauthorized viewing or misuse of your personal information.  We have notified the police and the FBI about this matter.

If you were a patient of the clinic and had a laboratory test conducted by Shiel between April 1, 2015 and January 27, 2017, the computer may have included information about you, including your name, address, date of birth, patient identification number or social security number, phone number and health information related to laboratory tests. We sent notification letters by first class mail to all affected individuals for whom Shiel has up-to-date contact information and offered complimentary fraud resolution and identity protection services.

We take the protection of personal information of our patients very seriously and are taking steps to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future, including implementing internal policies and procedures about securing lab computer equipment. We are also re-evaluating the security features of the designated computers and lab software that contain patient information.

If you think this incident may have involved your personal information and did not receive a notification letter from us in the mail, please call us toll-free at 800-205-5005, extension 5810.
